Eye coil MRI hardware used for high-resolution ocular imaging

MRI for Eye Cancer Diagnosis

Until recently, MRI played little role in the diagnosis and management of eye tumours. We have been among the pioneers in changing this, developing high-resolution ocular MRI protocols that combine dedicated hardware, such as a dedicated eye coil, with acquisition sequences robust against eye movement. Parts of this technology are now integrated into clinical MRI scanners worldwide.

Our clinical research has focused primarily on uveal melanoma, the most common primary eye tumour in the Netherlands, where we have characterised its radiological features with histopathological validation. We are currently extending these methods to other ocular tumours and exploring quantitative MRI as an early indicator of therapy response and prognosis.
